Localization Summer School 2021 – July 19 – 30, 2021
Learn latest technologies, trends and workflows in localization industry in our two-week online localization summer school with the support of experienced localization trainers from academia and localization industry. From localization engineering tasks to project management and from latest advances in CAT tools to machine translation customization, you will have a chance to deep dive into every aspects of localization industry with hands-on practical sessions. Besides, our invited speakers with different profiles from localization industry will provide you useful insights about real scenarios in the industry and guide your through your localization career.
New Roles and Skills in Localization Industry
Localization industry is one of the fastest growing language service areas. COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated digitalization all around world, which, in turn, has created opportunities for IT companies to extend their digital products and services across the globe through localization. As a result of these developments, the need for specialists in mobile app localization, videogame localization, website localization, software localization as well as audiovisual content localization is increasing exponentially. Besides, developments in artificial intelligence, machine learning and natural language processing including machine translation are creating new areas of discovery and implementation for localization professionals.
In this summer school, we would like to help you be prepared for roles including but not limited to language specialist, localization specialist, localization program manager, localization project manager, localization engineer and other relevant roles in the industry.
While providing the training, we also highlight the importance of having a critical perspective towards the technologies used and the way they are presented in academia and industry. This critical approach helps foster participants in selecting what technologies or tools they use even after the summer school without the need to depend on a few commercial software thanks to free and open source alternatives.
How will the course be held?
All the classes will be online and in English. You will be able to connect to the classes through a video conferencing tool such as Jitsi or Zoom. You will be able to use your own PC. There will be no need to purchase any license for any tools during the summer school. You will have access to the video recording in case you cannot join any part of the school. In total, you will receive 50 hours of teaching.
Who should join this summer school?
This summer school provides a comprehensive overview to localization tools, process and trends. Freelance translators, translation students, translation professors, language industry employees who would like to reinforce their knowledge in localization industry as well as anyone interested in being a localization professional are welcome to join. No prior knowledge of CAT tools is required.
What do we offer?
Aside from the intensive courses, we offer you the possibility to connect with colleagues from all around the world and foster a community of localization professionals which you will feel attached to though everything will be online. Upon completing the summer school, you will receive a certificate of participation. No exam will be held but we will encourage you to support a free and open source project with localization. This will be optional.
You will also be able to meet industry professionals from different roles and ask all your questions and get the chance to network with them and establish strong relationships. Finally, once a week, we will have e-coffee break to freely chat and socialize.
Who are we?
Localization Summer School is a new, independent course initiative born from the Tradumàtica Translation Technologies Summer School in Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Aside from generic translation technologies, its focus is on localization industry and its workflows. As an independent project, the initiative called Translation Technologies Academy (TTA) aims to provide trainings for individuals, companies and organizations throughout the year with long courses as well as short webinars, workshops and other activities. This year the summer school is coordinated by Dr. Gokhan Dogru who is based in Barcelona and teaching in Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Our professors have been teaching in Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, Universitat Pompeu Fabra and University of Geneva among others.

You’ll receive the video recordings of the classes that you missed. We also provide the possibility of video-only access to the summer school during the summer for a limited number new students.
